Do you actually need spine surgery? Five questions to ask first

Many episodes of back pain are treated without an operation. Here are five useful questions to discuss before deciding on surgery.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Abdul Baker, MD, FAANS, FACS, FCNS

Before any procedure is scheduled, several questions deserve clear answers.

What non-surgical care has been tried? Physical therapy, medication, injections, or activity changes may be appropriate depending on the diagnosis.

Does the imaging match the symptoms? Imaging findings need to be interpreted alongside the examination and history.

Is there a progressive neurological deficit? New or worsening weakness, numbness, or loss of function can affect timing and urgency.

What may happen without surgery? Some conditions can be observed; others require timely treatment.

What alternatives are available? The options, expected benefits, limitations, and recovery demands should be compared for the individual case.

If you have questions about a recommendation, a second opinion can provide another review of the diagnosis and options. Contact Dallas Regenex to ask which consultation formats may be available.
